Everything to look forward to in Dubai in 2022! It’s a rockstar line-up

We’ve had a strange couple of years, haven’t we?

By the standards of many cities there have been a wealth of openings, events and talking points.

But by Dubai’s incredible standards it was a little quiet.

While the spectre of the global coronavirus pandemic lingers on, we’re starting to see headline acts returning to the city and major developments putting the final polish before a grand opening.

2022 will see returning favourites such as world-renowned artfoodshopping and literature festivals that have become annual fixtures on the Dubai social calendar.

There is sure to be plenty of entertainment to look forward to, with comedytheatre and music acts already booking venues.

Most intriguing of all are the new must-see venues about to open their doors. Stunning new hotels, high-profile restaurants and incredible new nightspots to explore. Oh, and the city’s coolest building will open up, too.

All signs point towards it being another incredible year lived at the speed of Dubai.
Check out our selection of 22 of the most exciting things to look forward to in 2022.

MAJOR NEW OPENINGS

Museum of the Future

Settle a debate for us – is this Sheikh Zayed Road attraction now Dubai’s coolest building? Seriously. We’ve watched it being built for years now and it already feels familiar, but we really think it might be the most beautiful building in the city.

There are taller buildings, the Burj Al Arab is obviously iconic and there are a few others that stand out, but this might actually be the finest and most postcard-worthy of them all. The torus-shaped museum has a stainless steel facade and features Arabic calligraphy including quotes from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Part of the distinctive writing reads “We may not live for hundreds of years, but the products of our creativity can leave a legacy long after we are gone” and the sentiment is certainly true here.

We can’t wait to step inside and see the exhibits which, unlike most museums, are forward-facing rather than retrospective, with visitors invited to go on a journey to 2071.
For details, visit www.museumofthefuture.ae

District 2020

The finest development of 2022 might already be here. Expo 2020 has been a phenomenal success and is attracting rave reviews from around the world. After the event draws to a close in March, a smart city focussed on innovation and technology will emerge. The country pavilions will all be packed up and sent home, but 80 percent of the project’s built environment will be repurposed as part of Expo’s sustainable goals.

What remains is the dawning of a new Dubai urban zone, aiming to attract businesses and entrepreneurs to sectors such as AI, big data and the Internet of Things. All sounds very impressive, but what does it mean?

Well, while Expo 2020 is currently the hottest ticket in town and a place we should all visit, it willis ultimately a long-term project and one where we live, work and rest.

For District 2020, Expo is just the start. It is earmarked as one of the key areas for growth in Dubai’s 2040 masterplan and will be one of the areas of greatest change in the years ahead. Watch this space.

New year, new weekend

In less than three weeks, life as we know it will change dramatically. Weekends in the UAE will shift to a Saturday-Sunday, with a half-day on Friday. The transition applies to all federal government employees, but schools across the UAE have already announced plans to adopt the new weekend and it is likely to roll out across the private sector. Team Time Out is making the move to a Saturday-Sunday weekend, while over in Sharjah, the entire emirate will work a four-day week (race you there).

As we gear up to starting our week on a Monday – and wait anxiously for Dubai’s finest restaurants to announce that they are moving their brunches to Saturdays – here’s a quick guide to the new-look week for a bold new year.

What’s happening?
Starting Saturday January 1, the new system gives federal government employees an eight-hour workday from Monday to Thursday. The day will start at 7.30am and end at 3.30pm. They will also work for four-and-a-half hours on Friday, from 7.30am to noon. Federal employees will have a two-and-a-half day long weekend. Friday sermons and prayers will be held after 1.15pm all year long in the UAE. There will also be flexible working hours and work-from-home options on Fridays.

Why is this taking place?
The move will align the UAE with global markets and the longer weekends are intended to “boost productivity and improve work-life balance”. Sounds good to us.

The World Islands

A whole new world is finally starting to appear on reclaimed land just off the Dubai coast.Anantara World Islands Dubai will open in the final days of 2021 and marks what could be a busy year for the World Islands. Situated in ‘South America’ it will be a luxury staycation retreat for anybody lucky enough to snag a booking at the 70 suites and beach villas.

We’re hoping the Anantara opening will be the first of many planned resorts in the most ambitious of mega-developments. Next up we could see the long-awaited Portofino Family Hotel in Dubai. It is part of the Heart of Europe cluster and will mimic the picturesque Italian fishing village. This hotel will cater only to families and is said to have more than 500 aquariums and a hanging garden.

When complete the first phase of the Heart Of Europe will also be home to the Sweden Beach Palace (where every ground floor includes a snow room) Germany Island, couple’s retreat Honeymoon Island (with a dedicated seven-star wedding hotel), underwater hotel Floating Venice and more.
The next phase of openings are expected Q1 in 2022. See www.thoe.com for details.

Dh125m Beach Palace on Dubai’s Sweden Island

The villa on The World Islands development comes with a private beach and VVIP neighbours

There is no doubt that the UAE is home to some spectacular properties. From penthouse apartments to plush villas with sprawling gardens and incredible pools, it’s a real estate haven.

Each week, The National showcases some of the finest homes on offer in its Property of the Week. Here, we take a closer look at a Sweden Beach Palace villa on Dubai’s World Islands.

The key details

This seven-bedroom mansion is part of The Heart of Europe development at The World Islands off the coast of Dubai. It is one of nine villas on the Sweden Island, of which eight are sold. The villa comes with eight bathrooms, has a built up area of 25,000 square feet and sits on a plot of 34,500 square feet. It is being marketed by Luxhabitat Sotheby’s International Realty at Dh125 million ($34m).

What’s the story?

There’s luxury homes, and there’s Sweden Beach Palace.

Aside from Abu Dhabi’s Nurai Island, this is probably as close as you are going to get to living on a tropical island in the UAE.

And it’s difficult to decide which feature of this property is most attractive. There’s the privacy for a start – being five kilometres off the Dubai coast and having neighbours made up of regional royalty.

Then there’s the private beach and outdoor space. You can fly in all your friends and family via helicopter (or boat) and utilise the vast rooftop terrace until the sun comes back up, or simply revel in the peace and quiet of living at sea. If you need a break from the water and sand, there is a private tropical forest consisting of 80 species of trees and thousands of plants.

As for the property’s interior, it comes with luxury-branded furniture, Scandinavian timber flooring, two kitchens, a master bedroom suite with his and hers changing rooms and stunning bathrooms.

Why buy a penthouse apartment or a spacious community villa when you can live on an island with an almost endless list of benefits?

What the broker says …

Does anyone reside full-time at the Sweden Island?

Not yet, the handover certificate will be issued in December. The main reason for it is that the developer wants to assure a perfect experience for the residents in terms of transportation to and from the island, as well as access to amenities by the Monaco hotel which is opening next door by the end of this year.

The neighbours have to approve the new owner … What do you need to pass the test?

Yes correct, the main reason being that the neighbours are all VVIP (including royalty). The rule was put in place that the new buyer must be vetted by the authorities at first, and then be approved by all the neighbours at Sweden Island in order to be allowed to purchase, much like a housing co-op seen in major cities worldwide. Even though Sweden Island is a private island, it is still part of The Heart of Europe holiday destination, so Sweden residents have full access to all the other islands and its hotels, but nobody except the Sweden residents have access to Sweden Islands.

How is The Heart of Europe progressing?

It is in full swing and nearing completion. The developer made sure to utilise the time during the pandemic to push forward the construction progress. The first hotels are ready and will open during Expo 2020 Dubai. Germany Island, Sweden Island and the Honeymoon Island along with a set of Floating Seahorses will be handed over by the end of 2021. If one would visit the islands today, they would not believe their eyes.

Is the Sweden Beach Palace different to the other villas?

Yes indeed, Villa 1 is on a corner plot which is a far larger plot than the others, and it is facing west, enjoying a stunning sunset view. At the entertainment hall, which features a full glass roof, you have a 300º view across all of the islands and all the most famous buildings in Dubai, such as Burj Al Arab, Burj Khalifa and Atlantis, The Palm, to name a few.

How convenient is it living on the islands with necessities such as food etc?

The hotels at The Heart of Europe will offer a la carte services to all the residents at Sweden Island, including 24-hour room service. Groceries are located within the hotels that are easily accessible by the residents as well. A butler service is available as well to handle basically all the needs of the residents. Imagine living in your private beach palace, but with five-star hotel service at your fingertips.

Is this Dubai’s most extraordinary property?

Owning a palace on an island, with a la carte services by five-star hotels, your private beach, and a tropical forest surrounding it, it is like a dream come true for someone who can afford it. Extraordinary is just an understatement.

Huset på ”Sweden Island” har ett snörum / The house on “Sweden Island” has a snow room

ENGLISH VERSION

In Dubai, there is a house for sale on the artificial island “Sweden Island” which is located in the archipelago “The Heart of Europe”, with snow rooms and its own beach. And of course the price is accordingly.

In Dubai in the Persian Gulf is the artificial archipelago “The World”, which consists of 300 islands that together form a kind of world atlas. A group is called “The heart of Europe” where, among other things, the small island “Sweden Island” is located. The archipelago plans to open in October this year and then there will be 15 luxury hotels, a variety of activities and a party island.

You can get to the Swedish island by boat or helicopter. There are only nine houses on the island, and one of them is for sale. If you come by boat, you need to go through a landscaped jungle to get to the house.

The Viking House has a gold-colored roof, shaped like an upside-down ship. At the front of the roof is a dragon head as decoration.

The design of the houses has probably not had historical relevance as a starting point, but is intended to remind that Vikings came from Sweden.

Neighbor with “Germany”
The size is almost 2,400 square meters and there are seven bedrooms, one of which is a huge master bedroom. It has two walk in closets and a balcony with sea views and jacuzzi. Above is an amusement park for socializing, and above it in turn is the roof terrace with sea views. In addition to the sea, you can also see the island “Germany” from the house.

According to Stephan Hirzel, a broker at Luxhabitat Sotheby’s International Realty in Dubai who sells the house – it also contains two kitchens, a living room and an elevator that takes the residents between the six floors.

On the basement level is a private spa with a massage room where the lighting should resemble the light here, a sauna, a gym and one of the kitchens. A total of eight bathrooms have been built in the home.

Snow room with “real” snow
In the house there is something as odd as a snow room where snow falls from the roof. The snow is cuddly, so a snowball fight is possible in the small room, or you can build a snowman or a snow lantern. With outdoor temperatures above 40 degrees, it is certainly a good room to cool off in.

The snow room is an experience room that is located in the property that you cool off in after bathing. It is fantastic to experience minus degrees on a tropical island in a desert city like Dubai, writes broker Stephan Hirzel in an email.

To take a dip in the sea, those who will live there do not have to walk many steps, it is really crawling distance to their own beach. If you do not want to swim in the sea, there is an infinity pool and a jacuzzi at the back.

Imported trees and plants
The garden around the golden house does not need any lawn mowing as it consists of a landscaped jungle with about 80 imported different species of trees and plants.

It is not clear where you buy your food because there is no direct Ica or Coop store on the Swedish island. But if you can afford this, maybe you take the helicopter to the store, or it will be take-away.

The price for the Viking house on the Swedish island is SEK 300 million, but then all furniture is included.

Moving in can take place in December at the earliest, so maybe the house can be a very expensive Christmas present for someone. This includes both princes and sheiks as neighbors.
